Luke Pritchard, Paul Garred, Hugh Harris et Max Rafferty se sont rencontrés dans une école de musique, la Brighton Modern Music. Leur première chanson est une reprise des Strokes, Reptilia. Par la suite, ils décident d'écrire leurs propres compositions et sortent Sofa Song, leur deuxième single en Angleterre. En 2006, ils sortent leur premier album, Inside In Inside Out. L'album est une réussite commerciale avec plus d'un million exemplaires vendus au Royaume-Uni, et le groupe embraye sur une tournée mondiale. En 2008 sort le second album du groupe, appelé Konk en référence à leur studio d'enregistrement.

Fin janvier 2008, Max Rafferty quitte le groupe pour cause d'absences à répétition. Il est remplacé temporairement par Dan Logan.
